This is a journal for a painting, when it is done it will have inspiration text and images, reference and process photos, and some thoughts.

Inspiration

Here are some highlights from things I read just before starting on this painting.

Xin Qiji's (辛弃疾) "Green Jade Table in The Lantern Festival"

Having searched hundreds of times in the crowd, suddenly turning back, she is there in the dimmest candlelight.

The dim votive lights of the Cathedral hanging crimson and magenta among the trees

       Peering into tents and booths

A girl bumps her head on the table and crawls off to be by herself. A child is upset on the last day of school; she sits frozen and expressionless on the couch.

I shrank from the faces and forms by which I was surrounded. They were all fixed faces, full not of possibilities but of impossibilities, some gaunt, some bloated, some glaring with idiotic ferocity, some drowned beyond recovery in dreams; but all, in one way or another, distorted and faded. One had a feeling that they might fall to pieces at any moment if the light grew much stronger.

        Incarnadine.

Gazing up into the darkness I saw myself as a creature driven and derided by vanity; and my eyes burned with anguish and anger.

Midway through my work on this painting I became sad for a long time and abandoned it. Leaving this up in case someone finds it interesting.
